My new movie ゆりと蛍 (Yuri And The Fireflies)

If you've been keeping up with my blog you may know that I enjoy making films and even studied it in college. If not here are some of my films here, here and here. In total there were four films that I shot while in Art school but one of them while was completely filmed has not been finished yet. Due to the need for a lot of post production including special effects and life takingme on some interesting roads this last film was never completed. We'll I have decided to finally get it done.

The film is a Japanese movie titled "ゆりと蛍" (Yuri to Hotaru) which translates to "Yuri And The Fireflies" The cast is all Japanese and the movie is spoken in Japanese with English subtitles. Yuri And The Fireflies is the story of a young woman who escapes from a miserable life and abusive relationship using a mysterious book given to her as a child by her mother.

I'm happy to be working on the movie again as just from the footage shot alone I think it will turn out being my best yet. I'm not certain exactly when it will be finished but should be the first half of 2012 if everything stays on schedule. Below are two posters for the film.

Cause & Effect

Here is the last of my completed short films from my time in film school. It was the final one shot and completed (There is a 4th one shot but not completed.More on that another time). It was for a 16mm black and white film class. My idea for the film was to show how one minor action could escalate into a life changing moment by a series of related events through four people who have never met. It came out pretty much as planned with the exception of one scene that didn't expose correctly and had to be cut. Because of that scene and the nature of the movie you need to play close attention and perhaps watch a few times before you can piece it completely together. It's my Inception, hahaha.

Angela's Awakening

The last film I posted was my second ever during my time in Film school. It was for a digital film class and thus purposely shot on digital. This film is my first ever during University life. It was actually suppose to be for a 8mm film class shot using film but the cameras were a bit tricky for me and I thought I would also film the movie at the same time using a digital camera in case the film version didn't come out well. Turns out this was a pretty good idea because the film version didn't expose correctly and if it was not for the digital version I would have no version.

Hope you enjoy and are able to discover its true meaning.

After The Scare: A Look At The Life Of A Retired Boogeyman

A few years ago I was living in San Francisco studying film at an art University. It was a great time and though I have veered into a different path for the moment film will always be my first love.

There were four short movies that I wrote and directed my self while at school. Three of them were finished and the last and possibly the best is still in post-production limbo.

Here is the second one created.

Korean commercials are fun, but I'm slightly confused...

Let me explain this first. One day I was thinking about Japanese commercials and how wacky many of them can be so then I began to wonder if Korean commercials were just as strange to foreigners. I talked to Kangmul about this since she's from Seoul and we began to look up lots of Korean commercials on youtube. While I did find some that were completely wacky,(Like the ice cream one I posted two blogs below.) I also found many that seemed to have a distinct theme and layout. Here are a few things I learned about most of the Korean commercials I watched .

1. Features cute girl doing cute things into the camera
2. Features classic American song
3. Cutesy montage shots
4. Ends with quick phrase or a word
5. Product being advertise isn't clear until the very end
6. English voice over
7. After watching the commercial you cant help but to think "What the heck did I just watch?"

Taking these few rules into account I set out to make my very own Korean commercial. Can I match the oddness of native commercials? Will you be slightly confused? Here's hoping!
